🎉🐘 Exciting news: A herd of Asian elephants, including calves and their mothers, was recorded on camera trap in the Central Cardamom Mountains Landscape.
A herd of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) were recorded on camera walking through a protected area in the Central Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia. Three of the elephants in the herd are calves and appear to be in good health. The presence of the calves offers hope for the survival and reproduction of this rare species. Asian elephants are listed as endangered species on the IUCN Red List, threatened by poaching and habitat loss worldwide. According to the Ministry of Environment, there are an estimated 400 to 600 Asian elephants in Cambodia, most of which live in the Cardamom Mountains (southwest Cambodia) and the Eastern Plains Landscape (eastern Cambodia). In nature, elephants act as ecosystem engineers, with their enormous size clearing the path for smaller animals in the forest. Elephants also play an important role in dispersing seeds in the forest, and they need large enough habitats to move, forage, and live. Protecting natural habitats is essential for the survival of Asian elephants and other important [threatened], rare wildlife and maintaining the balance of the natural environment.
Conservation International Cambodia, in collaboration with the Royal Government of Cambodia, local communities, and partners, is implementing the REDD+ project in the Central Cardamom Mountain Landscape to safeguard wildlife, including the Asian elephant, and its habitat. This initiative is made possible by the support of USAID Morodok Baitang, Procter & Gamble Co and the Legacy Landscapes Fund.
